Alliance Statement on the September 20 Munshiganj Textile Factory Fire

September 21, 2017 — The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety expresses its condolences to the families of the six men and women who lost their lives in a fire Wednesday at Ideal Textile Mills, a garment factory in the Munshiganj district of Bangladesh. This factory is not affiliated with the Alliance.

This tragedy demonstrates why all factories in Bangladesh—not just those covered by current safety initiatives, including the Alliance—must be inspected and remediated, and their workforces trained to protect themselves in case of an emergency. We urge the government of Bangladesh to implement the National Action Plan commitments to improve factory safety, and to ensure that such work extends to improve workplace safety in all Bangladesh factories.
